Instructor-specific Questions
Answers
- Why can't I log into WebCampus? If you are using the correct username, your netID, it is very likely that you are using the wrong password. Call the Campus Computing Helpdesk, 775-682-5000, and ask that your NetID password be reset.
- Why doesn't my course show up in WebCampus? It may be that the instructor of your course is not using WebCampus (about 40-50% of UNR courses have a WebCampus component). If the course does have a WebCampus component and you register for it on the first day of class or after that time, you will not be loaded into the WebCampus component until the following morning.
- What are the most critical factors in being able to use WebCampus successfully? There are three important tasks to do in preparing your computer for easy use of WebCampus: 1) Enable Popup Windows for the WebCampus site. 2) Check to see if a supported version of Java resides on your computer. 3) Run the WebCampus Browser Check.
See the Preparing Your Computer for WebCampus guide for detailed information on each of these tasks.
- Are there online tutorials that I can use to help me learn to use WebCampus?
Instructors have access to a WebCampus Tutorials - Designers and Instructors course (a link to the course will appear in your Course List). (If you don't have access to this course, email webcampus@unr.edu and request that it be added to your courses.) Students can access tutorials on the most frequently used tools in WebCampus by clicking on the link to that tutorial in the Campus Bookmarks section of their My WebCampus page.
- Why can't I access a document or file in my WebCampus course? If you are using the Internet Explorer browser, it is likely that IE is blocking the download of the file due to a default setting. To change this setting: 1) Go to the Tool menu and select Internet Options. 2) Click on the Security tab and select Trusted Sites. 3) Click on the [Sites] button, enter http://webct.unr.edu and http://webcampus.unr.edu in the "Add this website to this zone" box and click on the [Add] button. Close the window. 4) In the "Security level for this zone" area, click on the [Custom level …] button. 5) Scroll down to the "Downloads" section of the settings and select "Enable" for "Automatic Prompting for file downloads" and for "File Download". Making these changes in IE's security settings will ensure that when you click on a non-HTML file, you will be asked if you want to Open or Save the file.
- Why can't I access one of the applications/tools (e.g. Mail, Grades, etc) in WebCampus? Run the Check Browser test (a Check Browser button is on the http://webcampus.unr.edu page and a link to Check Browser is also on your My WebCampus page). See the Preparing Your Computer for WebCampus document for more information.
- Why is a WebCampus course that I dropped still show up on My WebCampus page? When you withdraw from a course, you are dropped from the course in SIS, but you are not unenrolled from the WebCampus component of the course. Only the instructor of the course can un-enroll you, so please contact your instructor with the request to drop you from the course.
- If I have a question, who do I call?
- Students, call the Research & Computing Helpdesk, 775-682-5000.
- Instructors, call the Instructional Design Team, 775-682-6798.
- Why did the name WebCT change to WebCampus? Are we using a different course management system? WebCT merged with another company, Blackboard, and Blackboard renamed the WebCT version that we are using. We have chosen to refer to the this version of WebCT as WebCampus. WebCampus is not a different course management system but is the name used to refer to WebCT Campus Edition.
- When will students first have access to their courses for the semester? Unless the instructor requests otherwise, student will have access to their courses the Friday before classes begin.
- How do students get loaded into their WebCampus courses? A manual upload of students from Student Information Systems (SIS), where a student registers for a course, to the WebCampus server is done every morning, beginning approximately one week before the semester begins and continuing until the last date that a student can add a course. Therefore, when a student registers for a course, they will be added to the WebCampus course the next morning.
- As an instructor of a WebCampus course, can I enroll students, teaching assistants or other designers/instructors? Yes, as a primary instructor of the course, you can add users to your course in the roles of student, teaching assistant, section designer, or auditor.
- On the Teach tab, click on the Grade Book button (under Instructor Tools).
- Click on the [Enroll Members] button, which is located directly above the grade book table.
- Enter the NetID of the person you want to add and check the box next to the appropriate role. Note: The Teaching Assistant role gives the user the Teach tab and the Section Designer role gives the user the Build tab. A person can be assigned the dual roles of Teaching Assistant and Section Designer. The roles of Student and Auditor (a guest who doesn't receive grades) cannot be assigned in conjunction with any of the other roles.
- After adding users described in the manner above, be sure to click on the [Save] button at the bottom of the enrolled members list.
- How do I, as an instructor, request a course account? Do I have to submit a request each semester I plan to use WebCampus? To request a course account, go to http://www.cis.unr.edu/webct/login.aspx and fill out the course request. You must be the instructor of record to submit a course request. You will need to submit the request each semester you plan to use WebCampus so that we know get the account set up and load your students into the course.
- Are there workshops that will help me as an instructor to learn to design and teach with WebCampus? We offer WebCampus workshops each semester for faculty (full or part time), staff, and graduate students. You can register for these workshops at http://teaching.unr.edu/IDT/workshops. This webpage contains a listing, along with descriptions, of all of the workshops that the Instructional Design Team offers for the current semester.
