The file manager consists of files, indicated by the icon and folders . A file is a single document whereas a folder is a "container" of files and other folders. Before we examine these options, we will summarize some suggestions for naming files and folders that are important for both technical and organizational reasons.
- File and folder names in WebCT can include letters, numbers, spaces, commas, periods, and any of the following characters: _, &, ( ), -, and ~; however, file and folder names cannot begin with a dash (-), tilde (~), or space, nor can they end with a period or space. Note: Although WebCT supports spaces within file and folder names, some Web servers do not, so it is recommended that you don't use spaces in file and folder names. For maximum portability of your pages, use an underscore ( _ ) in lieu of a space and to minimize broken link instances caused by the use of mixed cases in names, use either all upper case or all lower case characters.
- The file extension (after the period) in file names should be a maximum of 3 characters. A notable exception is .html, which has four characters.
- Develop a naming convention that will help you remember what each file contains and/or where it fits into the structure of your course.
- Create a folder structure that corresponds to the topic structure of your course and that makes it easy to locate files.
To operate on a file, you select an option from the File Options and to operate on a folder, you select one of the options from the Folder Options.
